IN SEARCH OF DAGNY TAGGART

Dagny Taggart, the female protagonist of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged is on her way to Hollywood. It is difficult to find the real Dagny Taggart though just as everyone will continue to ask who John Galt is.  Angelina Jolie, who rumored to play the role of Dagny in the much-awaited movie based on Ayn Rand’s novel, may act and sound and resurrect that image of Dagny that are only to be found between the pages of a book.

Jolie was once quoted in an interview that Atlas shrugged “is one of those, I think, once-in-a-lifetime films that you feel, ‘If I only do a few more in my lifetime, that has to be one of them.’”

So who is Dagny Taggart? She was one of those whom Ayn Rand calls as movers or shakers of the world. She embodies a highly intellectual and individualist being who discovered the world dominated by males and constantly shuns and shakes that kind of world. “This is not the world I expected,” she says.

What makes Dagny Taggart different from female-protagonists-cum-heroines? She hardly makes gender an issue. Like Ayn Rand, Dagny was interested in developing her potentials and actualizing them as an individual.
